Quick Answer: When Is the Best Time to Elope in Iceland?

I highly recommend digging a little deeper into each month, but if you want a fast overview:

  • Best overall balance (weather + daylight hours + shoulder season): May and September
  • Best for midnight sun: June and July
  • Best for northern lights: October through March
  • Best for snow-covered scenery: December through February
  • Best for full Highland access: July and August

There isn’t one “perfect” month, but there is a perfect month for you!

Iceland Elopement by Month: What to Expect

Below is a breakdown of daylight hours, northern lights potential, crowd levels, and access considerations, and so much more.

January Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 4–7 hours
Average sunrise time: 10:50am
Average sunset time: 4:20pm
Northern Lights: Good potential
Crowds: Low
Weather Conditions: Possibility for snow, ice, intense wind and frequent storms
Pro tip: In dangerous weather, road access can be limited or completely closed (even on the main highway) therefore flexibility and ample time is important

January is dark and quiet. You’ll need flexibility because weather can shift unpredictably and storms tend to occur more frequently in January and February. That said, tourist traffic is lower on average, and popular locations can feel much more private with the right planning. If you want privacy while staying super accessible in gorgeous winter conditions, this can be a beautiful month.

January works best for couples who:

  • Want snowy landscapes and frozen waterfalls
  • Might be traveling on a budget, since accommodations are cheaper
  • Are comfortable with short daylight windows

Elopement idea: sunrise portraits on a black sand beach and vows in a crystal blue ice cave

February Elopements in Iceland

Daylight: 7–10 hours
Average sunrise time: 9:30am
Average sunset time: 6:00pm
Northern Lights: Good potential
Crowds: Still pretty low
Weather Conditions: Possibility for snow, ice, intense wind and frequent storms
Pro tip: Book your accommodation in a glass house lodge in the South Coast, which opens up opportunities to see the northern lights from your bedroom. Bonus: they usually come with a private hot tub and sauna!

February is one of my favorite winter months because daylight has returned in a way where the days start to get noticeably longer, and the sun is high enough in the sky that you can actually feel the vitamin D on your face. This gives the potential for days that can feel slightly warmer when the sun is out. But trust me, you won’t want to be without your sunglasses on a sunny snowy day!

February is ideal for:

  • Snowscapes + more usable daylight
  • Northern lights potential
  • Couples who want a winter elopement without peak darkness

Elopement idea: Sightseeing drive to the unreal Stokksnes beach to get married and take portraits, followed by the best lobster dinner you’ve ever had at Pakkhús Restaurant.

March Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 10–13 hours
Average sunrise time: 7:45am
Average sunset time: 7:30pm
Northern Lights: Moderate potential early in the month
Crowds: Low to moderate
Weather Conditions: Late winter conditions with snowstorms possible but increasing sunshine
Pro tip: This is usually the last month for many ice cave elopements! Come April and into summer, the warmth and sun make the caves unstable or collapsed.

March in Iceland is still very much winter in terms of weather, but spring is right around the corner and we especially feel that with more normal daylight hours. Snow is still common outside of Reykjavik, and daylight increases rapidly throughout the month. You may experience a mix of snowy landscapes, waterfalls waking up from winter, and lots of brown colors in the landscape due to thawing terrain.

Because daylight is significantly longer than in mid-winter, March offers more flexibility for full-day adventures while still maintaining the possibility of northern lights earlier in the month.

Ideal for couples who:

  • Prefer more daylight hours over a wintry landscape
  • Are totally okay with the possibility of snow, rain, or a mix of both (weather = mood!)
  • Prefer shoulder-season travel before summer tourism begins

Elopement idea: A day of exploring the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and your own private hot tub to wrap it all up

April Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 13–16 hours
Average sunrise time: 6:00am
Average sunset time: 9:00pm
Northern Lights: Low potential early in the month
Crowds: Moderate
Weather Conditions: Highly variable with sunshine, rain, and occasional snow possible
Pro tip: Spend 2 nights (the night of your elopement + the night before) at a cozy boutique hotel or a private cabin

April is one of the most unpredictable months in Iceland. It’s a transitional time where winter hasn’t fully left but spring hasn’t completely arrived either. Landscapes may still have snow in the mountains while lower elevations begin to thaw.

Because tourism hasn’t yet reached peak summer levels, many locations remain quieter than they will be later in the year.

This month works best for couples who:

  • Are very comfortable with variable weather conditions
  • Value fewer crowds over perfect greenery
  • Prefer longer daylight hours for exploring

Elopement idea: full-day experience exploring black churches, lava fields, dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, an infamous glacier, wildlife, and a ceremony beside a gorgeous coastal lighthouse.

May Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 16–20 hours
Average sunrise time: 4:00am
Average sunset time: 10:30pm
Northern Lights: Not visible
Crowds: Moderate
Weather Conditions: Generally stable spring weather with occasional rain and wind
Pro tip: Even though the sun sets on average at 10:30pm, the sky never gets completely dark, hence why its not possible to see the northern lights until mid-August

May is one of the most balanced months for eloping in Iceland. Daylight stretches into the early hours of the morning, landscapes turn vibrant green, and conditions are generally calmer than in winter. Sometimes the lupine bloom as early as mid-to-end May.

Tourism begins to increase but still hasn’t reached peak summer levels, meaning many locations remain accessible with thoughtful timing.

This month works best for couples who:

  • Want super long days for exploring
  • Prefer greener landscapes
  • Want to experience almost-summer, without the peak summer crowds

Elopement idea: multi-day adventure exploring the South Coast of Iceland, from Skógafoss waterfall all the way to Vestrahorn

June Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 20–24 hours
Average sunrise time: 3:00am
Average sunset time: Midnight (midnight sun)
Northern Lights: Not visible
Crowds: High
Weather Conditions: Mild temperatures with occasional rain and wind
Pro tip: The sun actually doesn’t set, it sort of just hovers right above the horizon and then rises again in the same spot

June is one of my favorite months in Iceland because it’s the beginning of the midnight sun season when daylight stretches around the clock. This creates extremely flexible timelines for elopements and photography and a really unique way to experience the country.

While tourism increases significantly, careful timing (especially evening or late-night ceremonies) can still create private experiences at popular locations.

This month works best for couples who:

  • Want extended daylight for exploring
  • Love lush summer landscapes
  • Want to plan adventurous multi-location elopements

Elopement idea: A full-day including a scenic hike or two, your vows on a glacier, black sand beach portraits, and a glass house lodge

July Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 20+ hours
Average sunrise time: 3:30am
Average sunset time: 11:30pm
Northern Lights: Not visible
Crowds: Peak
Weather Conditions: Mild summer weather with occasional rain
Pro tip: By July, the Highlands are accessible with proper 4×4 vehicles

July offers full access to Iceland’s Highlands, allowing for remote locations that are inaccessible during most of the year. While it is the busiest tourism month, exploring less visited areas or planning later-day ceremonies can absolutely create quieter or completely private experiences!

This month works best for couples who:

  • Want remote highland landscapes
  • Plan hiking-based elopements
  • Enjoy long summer days

Elopement idea: We’re going to the Highlands! I’ll hire us a private SuperJeep to take us into Thorsmörk, a local’s hiking paradise, complete with river crossing and private waterfalls

August Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 17–19 hours
Average sunrise time: 4:30am
Average sunset time: 10:30pm
Northern Lights: Possible late in the month
Crowds: High
Weather Conditions: Generally stable summer weather with chance of rain
Pro tip: This is the best month to visit the Westfjords, when most of the country is booming with tourism, this area tends to be the least visited (definitely not because it isn’t stunningly beautiful, only because it is off the beaten path)

August still feels like summer in Iceland, but sunsets return with richer evening light compared to June and July. Late in the month, darker skies begin to make northern lights possible again.

This month works best for couples who:

  • Want summer access with an earlier golden hours
  • Hope for a small chance of northern lights
  • Enjoy long adventure days

Elopement idea: We adventure together by 4×4 into the remote Highlands of Landmannalaugar – an area of Iceland that is completely otherworldly and rainbow-colored

September Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 12–15 hours
Average sunrise time: 6:15am
Average sunset time: 8:30pm
Northern Lights: Good potential
Crowds: Moderate
Weather Conditions: Still mild on average, but cooler at night
Pro tip: September is my favorite month for an elopement in Iceland

September is awesome for several reasons. As much as I love the midnight sun, it’s not for everyone and it’s in September when golden hour and sunset return to more “normal” hours. The landscapes are to die for – the mountain flora and fauna sport their autumn colors and everything just turns deep red, burnt orange, and gold. Everything looks like a literal painting. Also, the northern lights are usually awesome this month (in my experience)!

This month works best for couples who:

  • Prioritize a longer stay in Iceland
  • Prefer fewer tourists than peak summer
  • Love autumn colors and golden, sun-drenched light

Elopement idea: A half-day experience hiking into Múlagljúfur Canyon in allll of it’s autumn glory

October Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 10–11 hours
Average sunrise time: 7:45am
Average sunset time: 6:45pm
Northern Lights: High potential
Crowds: Low
Weather Conditions: The perfect mix of autumn and winter
Pro tip: Plan to travel as far as (or elope at) Stokksnes beach, the light here is sooo good in October

When October arrives, it marks the beginning of Iceland’s darker season. It’s like the opposite of spring when everything is preparing to bloom, in this month everything (and everyone) is preparing for winter. The weather on average is not yet completely nuts, but then again there was that time when it snowed 4 feet on Halloween!

This month works best for couples who:

  • Are seriously hoping for northern lights and have booked their stay for 7 days or more
  • Prefer those off-season, quieter travel months
  • Love dramatic autumn sunsets

Elopement idea: Exploring remote East Iceland, vows amongst rugged mountain views, and ending the day in a secluded hot spring

November Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 5–8 hours
Average sunrise time: 9:15am
Average sunset time: 5:00pm
Northern Lights: High potential
Crowds: Very low
Weather Conditions: Cold with rain, wind, and early winter storms possible
Pro tip: Locations featuring black beaches, glaciers, or ice caves are the way to go this month

November is what I would consider our first winter month. The weather can be challenging, or it can be fairly mild, it all depends on what Iceland decides for that day.

This month works best for couples who:

  • Want to elope before the holiday insanity
  • Love dramatic weather and moody landscapes
  • Are flexible with planning and have a go-with-the-flow attitude

Elopement idea: Half-day elopement exploring the Reykjanes Peninsula, recent lava flows, geothermal steam vents, and a black church

December Elopements in Iceland

Total Daylight: 4–5 hours
Average sunrise time: 10:30am
Average sunset time: 3:45pm
Northern Lights: High potential
Crowds: Moderate
Weather Conditions: Deep winter with snow, wind, and storms possible
Pro tip: December light is some of the best

December is the darkest month in Iceland, but it also has a unique atmosphere with snow-covered landscapes and festive winter traditions. This is why the crowds can feel bigger than in November or January, plus the northern lights potential is great. One of my favorite things about December is although daylight hours are limited, when the sun does come out, it is some of the best light year round.

This month works best for couples who:

  • Love cozy winter experiences
  • Want snowy landscapes
  • Are comfortable with short daylight windows

Elopement idea: exploring frozen waterfalls and winter landscapes followed by a candlelit dinner and northern lights

How to prioritize what matters most to you

If you want northern lights → elope in September or October. I know some people would tell you December, January, February; but the truth is the weather is fairer before winter arrives and it doesn’t matter how strong the aurora is – you won’t see them with cloudy skies

If you want to experience the midnight sun → June specifically

If you want to avoid tourists → avoid July and August, but rather come in May or September and opt for a nighttime elopement

If you want total privacy and a local’s experience → come in July or August and elope in the Highlands

If imperfect weather will seriously ruin your wedding day → I would not elope here

If you want your elopement to include magnificent hikes → July through September are best

If accessibility is important to you (think road closures or rigid plans) → avoid January through April

If budget matters → clue in your photographer before booking everything! Especially when you work with a local, they will know where it makes sense for you to spend your budget and where it is better to save.
