I'm ANGELA

Hi TherE!

This post includes a recent update about Reynisfjara black sand beach conditions at the section below.

A winter photoshoot in Iceland shouldn’t be about worrying over the weather, but rather about embracing the mood, movement, and winter light in its softest form.

The short days fill the skies with pink and blue hues, and often result in the day becoming one long golden hour. There are fewer people and more space to breathe.

This South Coast winter session moved from Reynisfjara black sand beach to the icy blues of Sólheimajökull Glacier, showing exactly why winter is one of the most underrated seasons for couple photos in Iceland. Cold, yes. But also calm, cinematic, and deeply intimate in a completely different way than summer often is.

If you’ve been wondering whether winter is really a good time for photos in Iceland, this is what it actually looks like.

Why winter works so well for photos in Iceland

Winter in Iceland strips everything back. The landscapes feel raw and quiet, and the light does most of the storytelling for you.

Because the sun stays low on the horizon, winter days are filled with soft, directional light instead of harsh overhead sun. Even at midday, the light feels like golden hour. Shadows are gentle, colors stay muted, and skin tones look natural and flattering.

Another gift of winter is s p a c e.
Crowds thin out, popular locations breathe a bit, and places that feel hectic in summer suddenly feel a little more personal.

Winter photos are about atmosphere. And if you’re drawn to mood over perfection, winter delivers every time.

Location 1: Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach at sunrise

We began the session around 11 a.m. on the South Coast of Iceland, just as the winter sun was lifting above the horizon.

On a good weather day in winter, Reynisfjara gives all the feels. The basalt columns rise up against soft skies, the black sand stretches endlessly, and the Atlantic moves with intimidating force. It’s dramatic and otherworldly, and possible to get away from the crowds as the beach goes for miles.

We stayed well back from the shoreline and worked close to the basalt columns, which offer both visual structure and natural shelter. With almost no one else around, the beach felt expansive and quiet, giving Tanner & Tyler space to slow down and settle into the moment.

Why Reynisfjara works in winter

  • Fewer crowds, even at peak times
  • Strong contrast between dark sand and soft winter skies
  • Natural framing from basalt columns
  • A dramatic setting that is illuminated by winter backdrops
  • Nearby backup locations in case of bad weather

A note on safety
Reynisfjara is stunning, but it demands respect. Waves at any time of year and in any condition are unpredictable, and staying far from the water is non-negotiable. Every session here is planned with safety first, positioning couples in visually strong areas well away from the shoreline. Tourists frequently lose their lives here by not following simple instructions.

February 2026 update
The shoreline at Reynisfjara has recently and rapidly eroded, and at this time, it’s not possible to enter the cave or stand near the basalt columns. However, Reynisfjara is still worth a visit, as long as safety considerations are taken into account. Check updated information at https://safetravel.is.

Location 2: exploring Sólheimajökull Glacier

From the coast, we drove about 30 minutes inland to Sólheimajökull Glacier, which gave us a complete shift in color, light, texture, and energy.

Sólheimajökull is known for its layers of volcanic ash cutting through blue ice, creating incredible contrast that’s especially striking in winter. We put on mini spikes and explored near the glacier lagoon, moving slowly and intentionally, letting the landscape guide the pace.

The low winter sun softened the icy blues, adding warmth without flattening the texture of the ice. This is the kind of light that only exists in winter due to the position of the sun: subtle, quiet, and incredibly cinematic.

Important note

It is safe to explore near the glacier lagoons together, but a hike up onto a glacier or into an ice cave requires a local glacier guide and specialized equipment. Want help crafting an engagement or elopement session on a glacier? I got you!

Why glaciers shine in winter

  • Softer tones and deeper blues make the images look incredible
  • No harsh highlights or sharp contrast
  • It’s easy to feel almost alone
  • A slower, more immersive experience

The beauty of Iceland’s winter light

Winter light is the reason why photographers quietly love this season. The sun stays low throughout the day, creating soft, even light without harsh shadows.

In mid-winter, the 4–5 hours of daylight offer consistent, flattering light. Instead of chasing good conditions, the light stays usable throughout the day, allowing sessions to move at a calm, flexible pace. This winter light also supports storytelling: It wraps gently around faces, keeps contrast soft, and allows the landscape to feel present without overpowering the people in it.

As a local photographer, I plan winter sessions with backup options and clear safety margins. I know when it makes sense to adjust plans, and when it’s safe to work through light wind or snow.

If you’re drawn to images that feel natural, atmospheric, and honest, winter light does most of the work for you.

Planning for comfort and safety in Iceland’s winter seasons

Winter photoshoots work best when comfort is built into the plan.

Layering is essential! Merino wool or synthetic base layers, fleece or wool mid layers, waterproof or water-resistant outerwear, waterproof boots or good shoes, and proper accessories make a noticeable difference in how long you can stay present and relaxed.

We also build flexibility into every winter timeline. Weather shifts quickly in Iceland, and working with it instead of against it leads to better experiences and stronger images.

Helpful winter essentials:

  • Merino or thermal base layers
  • Fleece or wool mid layers
  • Waterproof, sturdy boots or shoes with good traction
  • Hand warmers
  • Mini spikes for icy terrain
  • Windproof and waterproof/resistant outer layers (wool or fur coats work really well!)
  • Something to cover the ears

Great preparation is key to fully enjoying and staying present in your adventure.

Iconic or secluded: choosing the right South Coast locations

The South Coast offers a rare balance. You can access some of Iceland’s most recognizable landscapes while still finding moments of quiet, especially in winter.

Some couples are drawn to iconic places like Iceland’s famous black sand beach. Others prefer quieter locations tucked just off the main road. Neither approach is better, it’s about what feels right for you.

Every winter session is planned around:

  • Crowd levels for the season
  • Light direction and timing
  • Weather exposure
  • Your comfort and experience level

The goal isn’t just to have beautiful photos, but a complete day that feels aligned with how you want to experience Iceland.

Is winter the right season for your Iceland engagement photoshoot?

Winter photoshoots in Iceland are ideal for couples who:

  • Value mood and romance over perfection
  • Don’t mind a little wind or cold
  • Want fewer people around
  • Love soft, cinematic light
  • Are open to embracing the unexpected

If you’re looking for wildflowers, midnight sun, or milder temperatures, summer may be a better fit. But if you’re drawn to quiet landscapes, solitude, and images that feel grounded and emotional, winter is hard to beat!

Planning engagement photos in Iceland

A winter photoshoot in Iceland is less about braving the cold and more about choosing the right approach, locations, and pacing.

With thoughtful planning, winter becomes more of an advantage, and less something that you have to work around. The light slows you down. The landscapes open up. And the experience of it all becomes just as memorable as the photos!

If you’re thinking about having Iceland engagement photos or a couple’s session in Iceland, and wondering whether winter could work for you, I’d love to help you explore what’s possible.
