Planning an engagement session in Iceland is exciting, but it works best when you understand how the environment can affect your experience.

Weather, light, locations, and timing all matter here! A little preparation goes a long way toward staying comfortable, relaxed, and fully present during your session.

Here’s what to know if you’re planning an engagement session in Iceland:

Embrace the weather (and build it into your timeline)

Iceland is known for rapid and unpredictable weather changes. Sun, wind, rain, and snow can all happen within the same hour, sometimes just a few minutes from each location.

The goal shouldn’t be to avoid imperfect weather, but rather plan for it. Layers, waterproof outerwear, and flexibility make a huge difference. When you’re prepared, the weather feels more manageable rather than feeling like a disruption. And we always say in Iceland, “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing.”

Some of the strongest images come from imperfect conditions – wind adds movement; clouds soften light; rain can create drama – all without affecting comfort. When you’re prepared, you’re ready to embrace whatever Iceland gives.

Flexibility in timing and locations allows us to adjust calmly instead of rushing, which always leads to a better experience.

Choose locations based on the experience you want (not just the most Instagram-famous)

Iceland has no shortage of well-known locations, many of which have appeared in Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and others. But some of the best places for an elopement or engagement in Iceland are far less known.

Location planning depends on:

• the season
• available light
• weather exposure
• your comfort level
• the overall pace you want for the session

Some couples are drawn to iconic spots like black sand beaches or glaciers, others prefer quieter locations that feel more private – both can be great experiences with the right planning! What matters most is choosing locations that match your energy and allow the session to unfold naturally.

Understand how light changes in Iceland

Light in Iceland behaves differently than in most places.

In winter, the sun stays low on the horizon, creating soft, even light for most of the daylight hours. The day can start with pink and blue hues, then an extended golden hour, and a giant super moon.

In summer, daylight stretches long into the evening, and in some cases, never ends. Golden hour can last for hours, sometimes into the early morning, which gives a lot of flexibility but also requires intentional timelines.

No matter the season, planning around light helps shape the mood of the photos and keeps the day from feeling rushed.

Comfort matters more than perfection

You can look great and stay warm at the same time when you follow these fail-proof methods from a local.

Choose outfits you can move in, prepare a bunch of layers, and be comfortable: this will always lead to better photos than forcing something that looks good but feels impractical. Layers can be styled intentionally, and we’ll adjust as needed throughout the session.

I recommend skipping the Amazon purchase for these clothing items, as having well-made, long-lasting materials will serve you better both in the long run and while doing its job when and where it matters. Having a photoshoot in Iceland, there shouldn’t be pressure for perfect hair or heavy makeup. Wind, natural movement, and relaxed expressions create the most honest images. We’ll also build in time to warm up, reset, and take breaks when needed.

When you’re well-prepared and comfortable, it shows in how you move, how you interact with each other, and how the photos feel.

Why hiring a local photographer matters

Iceland is beautiful no doubt, but it’s also unpredictable, and in some cases dangerous if you don’t know what to look for.

A local photographer understands:

• changing weather patterns
• road and access conditions
• safety considerations at popular locations
• where you’re allowed to walk, and where you’re not

Just as importantly, a local photographer comes with backup plans. If conditions shift, there’s already an alternative (or several) in place.

Think of it as hiring a photographer and a local guide in one.
